The Elementary Study of Silver
The white metal that can be tarnished by this corrupted world, but cannot be destroyed.
"Having eyes, see ye not?" (Mark 8:18)

Silver Throughout the Bible

1400 years before Christ, God revealed His plan for man’s redemption in the design of His tabernacle.

Hebrews 9:24 NIV
For Christ did not enter a man–made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; He entered Heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence.

John  4:20-26 NIV

20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”   21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”   25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”   26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”

This woman recognizes that worship was something meaningful.  Jesus says while others (Samaritans) worship instinctively, they do so  ignorantly.  “You Samaritans worship what you do not know”, but the Jews worship according to the pattern given by God to Moses.   “We worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews”.   In verses 23-24 Jesus explains how the pattern will be replaced by the reality of true worship, which will be “in spirit and truth“.   He, of course, is also referring to the fact that Messiah will be a descendant of Abraham through Isaac.

Exodus 38:19   The Courtyard:

The foundation was made from earthly copper that will not last,  the silver is all above and unreachable, as was their redemption under the Old Covenant.

Exodus 36:22-24   The Tabernacle:

The foundation of the “Holy Place” and the “Most Holy Place”, the place where God met man, was silver (redemption).   The silver touched the earth, and this prophesied that Messiah would came to earth to redeem us.   Or, can we achieve redemption with human effort (Proverbs 30:4)?  The Law came down from God (Deuteronomy 30:11-14).   Christ came down from God (Phil 2:6-11).   Explained by Paul in Romans 10:5-9.

Exodus 30:11-16   Atonement Money:

Notice that the atonement money was paid by all.   Everyone was guilty.

Exodus 38:25-27

The rich man was no more guilty, nor less guilty than the poor man.

Miscellaneous Silver References

Zechariah 11:12-13   Does this sound familiar?

Matthew 27:3-10

As prophesied by both the tabernacle and Zechariah, the ransom for many was paid in silver.   As with Joseph, who was sold by his brothers, we have seen how God can take that which man meant for evil, and turn it into a ransom for many.
